Registration and re-registration in doctorate

You must hold a national master’s degree or another degree conferring the rank of master’s degree, at the end of a training course qualifying for research.

You are encouraged to check the doctoral student’s guide. It will help you complete the procedures to register for the 1st year or to re-register.

The access conditions to the doctorate are specified by the decree of May 25, 2016.

If this degree condition is not met, the head of the university may, by exemption and on a proposal from the Board of the Doctoral School (ED), register:

  • students who have completed studies of an equivalent level abroad,
  • students benefiting from the validation of learning through experience.

The registration for the doctorate is delivered by the head of the university based on the proposal from the director of the ED, after consulting with the thesis director and the director of the research unit.

The preparation of the thesis is usually done over a period of three years. A renewal of registration beyond the third year requires obtaining an exemption.

Registration must be renewed at the beginning of each academic year from September 1st to November 15th.
In the case of an international joint thesis supervision, registration must be renewed each year in both universities even when registration fees are waived.

Registration from the first to the third year:

It is done in two stages:

Obtaining necessary authorizations

The candidate downloads the doctorate pedagogical registration file and presents or sends this document to the ED administration office, along with the specified documents. When registering for the first time for a doctorate, the candidate must read the thesis charter and the doctoral training program, and commit to comply with their provisions.

Administrative registration

Upon receiving the file and after assessment and signature from the director of the ED and the President of the university, the administration department proceeds with the administrative registration.

The payment record of the registration fees allows for the release of the letter of enrollment. This certificate and the student card (or sticker) are delivered directly or sent by post to the doctoral student.

Re-enrollment in fourth year and above

The candidate’s file must then be supplemented by a request for exemption for an additional year, justified and written on plain paper including the date expected for the defense, the student’s report specifying the progress of the thesis and a motivated letter provided by the thesis director.

The request is assessed by the Doctoral School board, after consultation with the thesis monitoring committee.
